Tesla

A great battery for retrofitting larger home solar systems, from the best-known name in electric vehicles.

Ideal For:

Tesla's home batteries offer terrific value if you're looking to add battery storage to an existing solar system - especially if it's larger than 5 kW in size. At 14 kWh, the Powerwall 2 has a huge capacity, so it's best if you also use at least 25 kWh of electricity per day. It's also very space-efficient, and its above-average protection ratings against dust and water make it a great choice for outdoor installations. However, the Powerwall's lack of hybrid inverter compatibility means that it's not a good choice if you're building a new solar and battery storage system from scratch, since you'll have to add costs and lose overall system efficiency with separate inverters. The other major drawback is a warranty with major limitations on off-peak charging, so look elsewhere if you want to take advantage of cheap off-peak rates.
