For many people, the best way to gain the full benefits of a solar panel energy system is with a battery. Every state and every energy retailer is different, but there’s one thing that always remains the same - choosing the right battery is seriously important for getting the most out of your solar investment.
Knowing your property, region’s climate and quality assurance basics are key when shopping around for a solar panel.
Assuming that batteries cycle once/day (as they charge during the day and are used at night), there are 3,650 cycles in a 10 year period. Researching batteries that are rated to at least 3,650 cycles is a good place to start but some are rated up to 6,000-8,000 cycles.
Lithium Ion Phosphate batteries are often the preferred chemistry, withstanding tough conditions and offering reliability. It’s worth knowing considering the geography of where you live, especially as other chemistries tend to be a bit smaller and might not last as long against certain environmental pressures. You can read all about battery chemistry types here.
The size of the battery you choose will be a reflection of how much space you have to work with. If you’re short on space, you’ll be limited to smaller battery but if you have the space to accommodate a larger battery, you’ll have an advantage in terms of performance. For a family sized battery, the smaller batteries are not much bigger than the size of a carry-on suitcase, where the larger batteries are 2-3 times larger than that.
Across the range of solutions, batteries will either be suitable for indoor installation (typically in a garage or shed) or rated for outdoor installation (suitable for anywhere other than in direct sunlight). Choosing to install outdoors will likely involve finding an accessible spot on a verandah, deck, or on an outside wall under an awning.
